Acai A Anti Aging
So what anti-aging qualities can Acai deliver?
With so much aggressive marketing on the Internet, it would seem
that Acai can help treat anything from weight loss, to extending your
life, to preventing cancer to increasing your penis size - far fetched
understandably but there are in fact such claims and products out
there.
Hopefully most individuals take such marketing with a
pinch of salt, but at the same time it's difficult to separate the B.S
from what health benefits this ingredient might potentially offer.
So, whilst this Website focuses on both anti-aging serums and creams
for men and women as well as longevity products which include
Resveratrol based products, the supposed longevity ingredient that has
also received a lot of fuss, - let us clarify primarily on what, if
any, anti-aging qualities might have to offer.
What are the antioxidant levels of Acai?
There are conflicting reports of Acai's antioxidant capacity as this
is exactly how both good and bad products attempt to lure the
consumer, by suggesting these these qualities will deliver what ever the
specific health benefits are.
A comparative analysis by: -
Kuskoski EM, Asuero AG, Morales MT, Fett R (2006). "Wild fruits and
pulps of frozen fruits: antioxidant activity, polyphenols and
anthocyanins". Cienc Rural 36 (4 (July/Aug)) - published 3 years ago,
suggests that acai has an antioxidant potency on par with 11 varieties
of frozen juice pulps but lower than mango, strawberries and grapes.
Well this is obviously confusing as most of what you'll read about Acai
will display headlines which label it the Number 1 Super-Food, with
the highest antioxidant levels ever tested by scientists.
Where do Acai's anti-aging claims originate?
Whilst Oprah and Dr Oz are currently filling law suits against
manufacturers and marketers who feel they have been associating their
name illegally with these products - Mr Perricone however, who
features on Oprah\'s Website does in fact do exactly this:, by labelling
it as his Number 1 Superfood: See here
Whilst Mr Perricone does not in farct state it delivers the highest
antioxidant ability of any food type, he does suggest: "The fatty acid
content in açaí resembles that of olive oil, and is rich in
monounsaturated oleic acid. Oleic acid is important for a number of
reasons. It helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane;
together they help make cell membranes more supple. By keeping the cell
membrane supple, all hormones, neurotransmitter and insulin receptors
function more efficiently. This is particularly important because high
insulin levels create an inflammatory state, and we know, inflammation
causes aging".
Describing Acai as "this little berry is
one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world!",
where..."Hidden within its royal purple pigment is the magic that makes
it nature's perfect energy fruit. Açaí is packed full of antioxidants,
amino acids and essential fatty acids.." he does go someway in
recommending if not promoting this product with claims that clearly
conflict with the 2006 report by Kuskoski EM, Asuero AG, Morales MT,
Fett R.
Acai's anti-aging proof
The source can be seen here with a report by Lichtenthäler R,
Rodrigues RB, Maia JG, Papagiannopoulos M, Fabricius H, Marx F (Feb
2005). "Total oxidant scavenging capacities of Euterpe oleracea Mart.
(Açaí) fruits". Int J Food Sci Nutr 56 (1): 53–64.

Here the white
acai species was tested against the purple acai berry, where results
demonstrated that the purple variety displayed excellent antioxidant
activity against peroxyl radicals, good against peroxynitrite.
Quotations extracted from pubmed, Americas online medical journal,
established in 1988 as a national resource for molecular biology
information, appears to offer credible evidence here that there are
antioxidants essential at killing mechanisms of invading pathogens,
which cause aging.
Bottom Line:
One the one hand acai offers less antioxidants than a grape and on
the other, it is "one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the
world", where they display excellent antioxidant activity against
peroxyl radicals, one of the toxic radicals which assists in premature
aging.
Acai berry constitutes 48% of food weight consumed per
person in northern Brazils, which is a staggering statistic but this
bears no weight on whether or not acai delivers anti-aging qualities.
Most of what you will read online is tainted by scammed consumers after
a quick fix diet, but there is little to go by in terms of its
antioxidant ability to reduce aging on the skin.
Here, the only
current ability we have at understanding how we age is through the
reduction of collagen product coupled with free-radicals - the speeding
up of the oxidation process on your skin.
Antioxidants provides
an ability to slow down this oxidation process by returning a
free-radical into a harmless cell by supplying it with an electron
returning it to it's former state - and Acai as stated in some ways
provides through its ORAC ability.
